NPO Times for Infants and Children

(From the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology)

  1. NPO Times should be individually tailored to the child's age to avoid unnecessary and undesirable dehydration and anxiety.

  2. Pediatric anesthesiologists at UCLA consider solids to include breast milk, formula, bottle milk, and unstrained fruit juices.

  3. The only clear liquids allowable are water, sugar water, Kool-Aid, Pedialyte, white soda, apple juice, and Gatorade.

  4. Clear liquids should be encouraged just before NPO times.
