NPO Times for Infants and Children
(From the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology)
-
NPO Times should be individually tailored to the child's age to avoid unnecessary and undesirable dehydration and anxiety.
-
Pediatric anesthesiologists at UCLA consider solids to include breast milk, formula, bottle milk, and unstrained fruit juices.
-
The only clear liquids allowable are water, sugar water, Kool-Aid, Pedialyte, white soda, apple juice, and Gatorade.
-
Clear liquids should be encouraged just before NPO times.
