Research Projects/Interests
Dr. Viñuela has had a distinguished 20 years career in neuroradiology. He helped develop the hyperselective balloon embolization with a new latex calibrated balloon for use in intracranial and extracranial circulation. He has researched the use of multiple embolic materials in intracranial lesions, the morphological and hemodynamic computer analysis of arteriovenous malformations, and the changes in blood flow, pressure and resistance after intravascular occlusions. He and his colleagues researched and helped develop the use of platinum detachable coils and electrothrombosis in the endovascular/endosaccular occlusion of intracranial aneurysms. His current current research involves ion implantation of GDC coils.
Dr. Viñuela has contributed sixteen chapters to books, and published more than 200 scientific articles related to arteriovenous malformations, endovascular therapy, therapeutic embolization and interventional neuroradiology, over 220 abstracts, as well as 14 chapters and three books. He has been invited to over 250 lectures all over the world from Europe, Latin America to Asia.
Besides being a member of many national and international academic and professional societies in medicine and neuroradiology, he is also one of the founding members of the Ibero Latin-American Society of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (SILAN), the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (WFITN) and the American Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (ASITN) and is presently the President of all three societies.
